Burkholder/Grout A History of Western Music. (7th edition) NY: W.W. Norton and Co, 2006.
We will be using only pages 1-327  for this course.
Study copies of the CD’s required for this course will be in Computer Lab . . . .CD’s 1-6.

OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this course will be to give the student detailed understanding of the development of Western Music from the ancient Greece to the early 17th century. Understanding the major trends in Western music as well as its function in society, and examination of the parallels with other fine arts is a further goal.
The focus of the course will be the study of musical literature. Major works from all instrumental and vocal genres will be studied from historical, theoretical, and social perspectives. The course will place a high degree of emphasis on listening.This class has been designated a Writing Intensive Course which requires that a minimum of 20 pages of writing occur during the class.  At the end of each homework assignment are 4 essays.  Each question of the essays should consist of no less that ½ typed page.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Class Attendance
Regular class attendance is mandatory. Only ONE missed class is allowed. Further absences lower your letter grade by one increment, for example (B+ to B) for EACH missed class.

2. Homework Assignments
Weekly homework assignments will be required. Each of the 14 assignments will count for 25 points for a total of 350  points.

3. Exams
There will be one midterm of (300 points) and there will be a final which will be worth 300 points.

Multiple choice, essay and Musical Identification, will comprise both midterm and final exams.

A listening test will be given as part of the Final: (100 points of the 300 total which comprise the final exam) The student must identify the Name of the Piece, the Name of the Composer and the Genre of the piece. All pieces are from the CDs 1-6. Play these CDs while you are studying and become as familiar with them as you can.

TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE: 950

Extra Credit Option
If the student desires to bring up his/her grade, ONE INCREMENT (eg. C+ to C) s/he may do so by attending two classical music concerts * and by submitting WELL WRITTEN two-page "Musical Reviews" which reflect Cliff Leaman's rules and procedures in HOW TO WRITE A MUSICAL REVIEW. TWO accepted and well written Musical Reviews can result in a raise in the Final grade for the class. You are encouraged to attend classical concerts in the Philadelphia area including the series from Philomel, Tempesta di Mare and others.
